6 tips on how to prepare for a virtual interview and ace them

I’ve come to understand that some people handle virtual interviews like they are casual chats. They’re not. You need to take them as seriously as you do the physical ones.

In this article, I’ll share 6 tips on how to prepare for and ace them!

Virtual interview

1. Dress up!

You may not be on video call throughout the interview, but at the start, they will need to put a face to the name & voice. Put yourself together and sit where lighting is decent.

2. Get your internet and electricity in order

“Network is poor in my area” is really lazy excuse. Go somewhere where internet connectivity is decent and if power outage will interrupt your call, consider using your generator whether or not there’s power from the power holding company.

3. Prepare

Don’t go in blind. I’ll never stop emphasising this. You need to prepare for every interview. Get your friends and family to do it with you. Draft responses to the typical questions like “tell us about yourself?”.

4. Know the basics!

At the very least, your interviewer expects you to have common sense (especially because it’s not so common). What skills and competences are expected for the role? Know them, demonstrate them.

PS: it is very likely that your interviewer is NOT HR.

5. Pay attention

Pay attention to the introductions and answer their questions accordingly. Different people listen to hear different things- things that align with their primary duties. Try not to get lost in your element.

Also, it’s your interview, centre yourself.

6. Keep it short

I didn’t say summarise everything. For many people (even HR), interviews are draining. Do well to go straight to the point as their internet and time are important to them.

If you don’t understand a question, clarify before answering.

Good luck with your interviews. 🙌🏼
